Scent work
Dogs see the world through their noses. They don’t smell a pie they smell, toasted flour, butter, eggs, fruit, sugar etc. Because of this phenomenal skill dogs are often used in detection work be it in policing, search and rescue or conservation. For us mere mortals with pet dogs there is the wonderful world of scent sports.
This introductory course in AKC Scentwork will teach your dog searching behaviors and build drive for searching. Later in the course we will introduce start line sequences, alert behaviors and odor. We will spend a lot of time learning to read our dog’s behavior when they are searching. Each week you will have a homework assignment that will take 10-15 minutes.
This course is appropriate for dogs of any age. Please reach out if your dog has trouble working around other dogs. In higher level courses it is a non-issue but for the 101 course we work at the facility in a group setting.
This program will offer 3 levels of group classes. Each dog progresses at their own rate and each level can be repeated as needed or private lessons can help you reach your goals. Mock trials and skill specific drop in classes will be available to keep your dogs skills moving forward. Teams from other facilities are also welcome to join these offerings with instructor permission.
